Heartland Catch UP: Season 19 Episode 9 “Revenge”
Hello, Heartland Fans! Season 19âs penultimate episode âRevengeâ delivers a powerful blend of tension, emotional reckonings, and character growth. From uncovering painful connections to the past to confronting present threats, this episode weaves multiple arcs together in a way that feels rich and consequential. In this episode: While Amy secretly works with Gracie’s new horse, Lou and Jack are determined to catch the rustlers and Dex confronts his past, and Georgie returns to Heartland. Spoiler warning: weâre diving deep into the events of this episode!
âYou really are like your mom.â — Gracie Pryce to Amy
Old Wounds & New Horses
The episode opens with Nathan stopping by Heartland before heading out for his final rodeo competition of the season, asking Amy for a favor: work with his sister Gracie Pryceâs new gelding, Bigby, who is head-shy and resistant to haltering or bridling. On paper, it seems simple, but Gracie had struggled with the horse and is too proud to ask for help directly. So Nathan brings Bigby to Heartland quietly.
At first, Amyâs secret training sessions go reasonably well, but the arrangement falls apart when Gracie unexpectedly shows up at Heartland. Amy is caught mid-session with Bigby, and Gracie is understandably annoyed that Nathan went behind her back. Rather than take the horse home, Gracie surprises Amy by choosing to stay and work with her the next day.
During a training session, Gracie opens up to Amy about her past, including how Marion (Amyâs late mother) once mentored her when she was a teen, but also how that period ended badly after a training incident involving a horse that led Gracie to believe Marion had undermined her. Curious, Amy reviews Marionâs old journals and finds Marion expressed regret over how things ended with Gracie. When Amy gently confronts Gracie with this, Gracie admits the incident happened but insists she hasnât repeated that mistake and that training Bigby has been its own challenge.
That realization becomes a breakthrough. Instead of focusing on correcting Bigbyâs behavior, Amy and Gracie shift to building connection, allowing Gracie to halter Bigby herself and create trust first. When it works, Gracie, visibly moved, tells Amy, âYou really are like your mom.â What started as secret training becomes a moment of closure and healing between two women with a shared but complicated past.

💍Welcome Back, Georgie!
Georgie arrives at Heartland at the episodeâs start, claiming sheâs in town for the Springview Grand Prix. But Lou soon notices Georgieâs engagement ring is gone, and Georgie confirms she and Quinn have broken up. At first, she insists sheâs fine and that the split was her decision, but cracks appear quickly: During a family dinner, Lou tries again to talk about it, and Georgie rebuffs her with practiced confidence. Later, a gentle conversation with her dad, Peter, leads to humor and candidness about how breakups really hurt even when we try not to show it.
When Georgie canât get Quinn to return her calls, she is eventually honest with her family: while she knew the relationship was fading, Quinn was upset and not prepared for the split and now Georgie worries sheâs lost not just a partner but a friend. The next morning, she leaves a heartfelt voicemail for Quinn, telling him she understands if he needs time and sheâd welcome connection when heâs ready.

🏒 Dex Faces His Past 👁️
Dexâs past finally catches up with him in this episode in the form of Shim, who first appears at Heartland while Amy is working Bigby in the round pen. Introducing himself as an âold friend,â Shim asks if Dex is around. His vague explanation and unsettling presence immediately put Amy on edge, signaling that this visit isnât just a friendly check-in.
Later, Shim tracks Dex down at the rodeo grounds, where the truth comes out: Shim isnât just an old hockey buddy, heâs the player who slammed Dexâs face into a goalpost during a game, causing the eye injury that ended Dexâs professional hockey career. The two havenât spoken since, and seeing Shim again drags Dex back into a traumatic moment heâs never truly processed. Around this time, River steps in as Dexâs main support, repeatedly choosing to be with him as he spirals, a choice that quietly pulls her further away from Katie.
Jack realizes something is wrong when Dex skips their training session and lies about it. When confronted, Dex admits that Shimâs return rattled him so badly that he couldnât focus. Jack suggests that maybe Shim wants to apologize, but Dex refuses to consider it. In his mind, Shim ruined his life, and that kind of damage canât be easily forgiven. Meanwhile, Katie grows increasingly hurt by Riverâs absence and her constant prioritizing of Dex, leaving their friendship strained and unspoken tensions building.
The next day, Shim returns to Heartland, this time making it clear that heâs there to take responsibility and apologize, but Dex doesnât let him finish. When Shim wonât leave, Dex punches him in front of Amy, Lyndy, Nathan, and Jack. Jack immediately orders Shim off the property and tells Dex he must be gone by morning. Afterward, Katie tries to make peace, apologizing for previously calling Dex âbad newsâ and hoping to smooth things over. But for Dex, the reconciliation comes too late, and he lashes out instead of owning his actions. In doing so, Dex not only loses his place at Heartland, but deepens the rift between Katie and River, showing how his unresolved anger is actively damaging every relationship around him.

🔮 Amy & Nathan Begin to Look Ahead
After the emotional turbulence of the last few episodes, Amy and Nathan finally seem to settle into a calmer rhythm here. Still, even in this quieter chapter, questions about the future linger. That uncertainty comes through a conversation Nathan has with his friend Tanner, who floats the idea of selling Nathan his ranch on Salt Spring Island. Tanner and his wife run a horse rescue there, work that clearly aligns with Amyâs passion. Although Nathan turns the offer down quickly, the idea does give him pause.
Nathan is clear with Amy: his life is in Hudson now, with her. But the very fact that the offer exists plants a seed. What could long-term plans look like for them? Where might their shared future lead? Amy doesnât comment much on the idea, but itâs clear she hears it, just as she has been quietly weighing similar questions since Nathanâs friend Parmâs wedding earlier this season. For Amy, who has spent years learning how to stand on her own, could her steady partnership with Nathan be the foundation to a future legacy that they build together (possibly outside of Heartland)?

🔎 The Search for Rustlers Continues…
The missing cattle mystery remains a central thread in this episode. After Heartland lost more head of cattle to rustlers, Lou and Jack resolve to catch them in the act. They begin with a surveillance camera setup near the pasture pass, syncing it to their phones to catch anyone who returns to steal more. But the rustlers are clever: they remove batteries, leaving Lou and Jack frustrated.
Tensions mount when Gracie winds up on Heartland property the same morning the camera fails, forcing Lou to juggle ranch stress with unresolved feelings from business rivalry & Â her new training relationship with Amy. Later, Jack, unwilling to sit back, camps out overnight alone with his rifle to watch for rustlers against Louâs better judgment.
In a twist of both danger and drama, clues lead them to hear a cattle trailer down the fence line. Jack investigates and spots a man loading cattle, but before he can act, another rustler knocks him unconscious. Lou arrives moments later to find him on the ground and the rustlers escaping. Though Jack is shaken and bruised, heâs conscious, and Lou refuses to let him chase them down recklessly.
The next morning, a police officer arrives after Lou memorized the trailerâs license plate, but official pursuit stalls due to another call. Enter Lisaâs private investigator (originally hired to find her sister Tammy): he runs the plate and discovers the trailer belongs to Wes Calstrom, a notorious figure from earlier in the series. At the end of the episode, we see Lou, Jack, and Nathan riding out toward Wesâs ranch, setting the stage for what will surely be a dramatic confrontation.
Favorite Quote from the Episode:
Lou: âEverything I do is for my family… We need to figure out a way out of this. And to you, that means standing in a field with your rifle. But to me, that means figuring out how to deal with everything weâve lost without going bankrupt! So Iâm sorry if I canât be there for my family without simultaneously doing everything I need to do to protect them!â
Jack: âOh, we have a lot in common, you and I.â
Letâs Discuss:
- What did you think of how Amy and Gracie finally found common ground? Did it surprise you that Marionâs past played a role in their dynamic?
- Lou and Jack risked a lot to catch the rustlers. Do you think confronting Wes Calstrom will be worth it, or will it escalate things too much?
- Dexâs confrontation with Shim ended with a physical outburst. In your view, should Jack have fired him, or are is he all out of second chances?
- Do you see a future for Amy outside of Heartland? What do you think of her getting married & moving away with Nathan?
